現代演劇研究会は、1950年代に明治大学名誉教授である来住正三氏（イギリス演劇）と坂本和男氏（アメリカ演劇）によって創設されました。お二人は中学時代からの同級生で、共に東京大学で学び、後に明治大学で教鞭をとられるという縁を持つ親友で、両氏は81歳で時期を同じくして亡くなられています。
研究会は、多くの英米演劇研究者が集まり、作家・作品研究、戯曲や研究書の翻訳、そして海外演劇事情を取り上げた雑誌『現代演劇』を南雲堂書店から出版し、20号にわたり好評を博しました。その後も新メンバーを加えつつ、新『現代演劇』は英潮社フェニックス新水社、朝日出版社から第22号まで出版されました。また、特集号として『現代英米の劇作家たち』や『イギリス・アメリカ演劇事典』『ドラマで観るアメリカ社会』なども刊行されました。2024年出版の23号は金星堂さんに出版していただきました。
現在、研究会では英米の社会情勢との関連を踏まえながら、近年上演された作品や話題となった作品に関する発表を行う例会を開催しています。2000年から2024年までにイギリスで上演された作品や受賞作品に関する発表を終え、次のアメリカの発表の準備を整えています。計画としてはコロナ禍を挟む数年に上演されたトニー賞やピューリッツァー賞受賞作品を取り上げ、世界情勢や背景となる大統領選にまつわる政治方針の転換や、ＢＬＭやジェンダー、移民などのアメリカ社会の動きと作品との関連を考察しています。研究会はスーザン＝ロリ：パークスや海外の演劇作家や研究者との交流会、観劇会、日本では手に入りにくい映画の上映会なども企画してきました。

例会はリラックスした討論の場として機能しており、その後の食事会ではより自由な議論や情報交換が行われ、出版物や新たな方向性が議論される場にもなっています。
来住氏と坂本氏の意志を受け継ぎ、演劇に関心を持つ人々が集い、自由に語り合い、様々な視点を学びながら研究成果を出版物として残す場として、研究会は今後も新しいメンバーを迎え入れながら充実と発展を続けていくことが期待されています。

The Modern Theatre Study Group was founded in the 1950s by Professor Shozo Kishi (British theatre) and Professor Kazuo Sakamoto (American theater) from Meiji University. The two were classmates since junior high school, studied together at the University of Tokyo, and later taught at Meiji University, making them close friends with unique ties. Both passed away at the age of 81 around the same time.
The study group gathered many researchers of British, American and Irish theater, published the journal "Modern Theatre" on playwrights, works, translations of plays and research books, and overseas theater conditions through Nanundou Publisher, and gained popularity over 20 issues. Subsequently, new issues of Modern Theatre were published by Eichosha Phoenix Publishing, Shinsuisha Publishing, and Asahi Publishing House up to the 22nd issue. In addition, special issues such as Modern British and American Playwrights, British and American Theatre Dictionary, and American Society through Drama were published. The 23rd issue, published in 2024, was published by Kinseido Publishing.
Currently, the study group meets regularly to give presentations on works that have been performed in recent years or that have been the subject of much discussion, taking into account their relationship with social conditions in Britain and America. Having completed presentations on works performed or awarded in Britain between 2000 and 2024, we are now preparing for the next round of presentations on American plays. The plan is to look at Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning works performed in the years surrounding the COVID pandemic and examine the relationship between these works and movements in American society, such as the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement, the #MeToo movement, the expansion of LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration issues, as well as changes in political policy related to the global situation and the background presidential election. The study group has also organized social gatherings with foreign playwrights and scholars, as well as theater and film screenings, including some that are difficult to see in Japan.
The regular meetings function as a relaxed forum for discussion, and the subsequent dinner meetings provide a place for more free-forum discussion and information exchange, where publications and new directions can be discussed.
Inheriting the will of Prof. Kishi and Prof. Sakamoto, the study group is expected to continue to grow and develop by welcoming new members, as a place where people with an interest in theater can gather, talk freely, and learn about various perspectives while leaving their research results in publications.
